25 Jan 2025
As I look back on 2024, I see a year that tested me in many ways but ultimately shaped me into a better version of myself. It wasn’t without its setbacks, but I’ll remember this year as a big win—one that brought significant personal growth and resilience. Here’s a recap of the year that was:
Health: A Wake-Up Call and a Turning Point
Early in the year, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. While I had always anticipated the possibility, the reality was a wake-up call that frightened me and spurred immediate action. I started meal-prepping my breakfast, relying on a simple but effective overnight oats recipe. I hired a cook/maid to ensure I could stick to healthy eating habits. While midnight cravings remain a challenge, I now eat primarily at home. One of my goals for 2025 is to reduce food delivery while enjoying the experience of dining out in moderation. I also significantly curtailed my alcohol consumption. In 2023, binge drinking was a problem, but in 2024, I transitioned to infrequent drinking, sticking to light beer or wine and limiting myself to a few pegs at most.
Before the diagnosis, my lifestyle was largely sedentary. I started by committing to walking 6,000 steps daily and achieved this goal 98% of the time. By October, I increased my target to 8,000 steps per day and maintained the same level of consistency. Walking has become a non-negotiable part of my routine—I’ve even walked home from the office to meet my step goal.
In addition, I rediscovered sports. Initially, I tried football but quickly switched to badminton due to limited stamina and concerns about injuries. Badminton is now a monthly ritual with my ISB friends, and we play at least three times a month. I also attempted running but had to stop after developing patellar tendonitis. On my doctor’s advice, I joined a gym and began working with a physical trainer. After just six weeks, I’ve already seen improvements in my strength and endurance—a journey I’m excited to continue in 2025.
Taking a Break: A Career Reset
Post-appraisal, I realized that my role at Simplilearn offered neither growth nor engaging work. Taking a break turned out to be one of the best decisions of the year. It gave me the space to explore other interests and focus on personal development.
While budget constraints and an expiring passport kept me from international travel, I embarked on several domestic trips. From the serene hills of Munnar to the historic ruins of Hampi, the high-altitude beauty of Leh, and the coastal charm of Pondicherry and Udupi, I explored India like never before. These trips taught me to travel light—living out of a single small bag for over a week.
The break also allowed me to reconnect more frequently with family. I visited Cuttack multiple times for significant family events—Bawa’s shraddha, Asit’s wedding, Bhai’s send-off, and Kaira’s first visit to India. I cherished the time spent with Kaira, reveling in her innocence and joy. I made several trips to Puri with family, creating beautiful memories.
Self-Care and Personal Growth
This year, I prioritized self-care like never before. After a cavity scare, I committed to brushing my teeth before bed—a habit I’ve maintained for nearly eight months. I also started taking care of my skin, thanks to Mammul’s encouragement. My routine is simple but effective: moisturizer, sunscreen, and a good facewash.
I began journaling in August, a habit that has become a therapeutic nightly ritual. Reflecting on the day helps me slow down, process my thoughts, and find clarity.
Evaluating my 2024 Goals
[Completed] Write at least five blog posts: I published five posts across platforms, including some on Nicheless.
[Completed] Learn Spanish consistently via Duolingo: I missed only five sessions all year, ending with a score of 78. This consistency is a personal milestone.
[Completed] Walk or Jog 4x per week: Walked at least 6,000 steps daily for 10 months and 8,000 steps daily since October.
[Completed] Complete three courses:
AI for Decision Making (Wharton)
Product Management Fundamentals (Aha!)
Technical Analysis (Quantum Trends)
While I couldn’t complete the Purdue Generative AI course due to access issues, I’m proud of building a foundational understanding of AI and product management.
[Completed] Read 20 Books: Surpassed my goal by reading 30 books—my best year yet. You can find my reading list and ratings here
[Failed] Yoga
[Failed] Meditation: Despite multiple attempts, I couldn’t build a consistent meditation habit. My focus and mindfulness need significant improvement in 2025.
Looking Ahead
2024 was transformative in so many ways—from health and fitness to personal growth and family connections. While there’s room for improvement, particularly with mindfulness and reducing food delivery, I’m proud of the strides I’ve made. Here’s to 2025—a year of new challenges, greater discipline, and continued growth.
